Focus & Discipline - Limiting Beliefs

I want you to pause for a second and consider this question..

What thoughts or beliefs do you have that get in the way of your progress? These are your limiting beliefs. It might be ‘I'm not smart enough’ or ‘I'm not pretty enough’ or "I am shy" or "I am bad with names".

Limiting beliefs are things that hold you back. I like to think of them as this list of rules we each have in our heads about what we should say, how we should be, and what we should do and about how the world works. They are based on things like-  what our parents taught us, how we were educated and our past experiences  Plus, we reinforce them either via our inner dialogue or what we tell other people. We seek out proof that they are true and think of them as "just who we are".

We say things like  ‘I'm not good at maths’ or “I’m terrible at public speaking”.  A  limiting belief could be about you, your interactions with other people, or with the world and how it works in general.

The problem is that limiting beliefs while they are designed to keep you safe or keep you from looking bad or embarrassing yourself- ultimately they have a negative effect on you. They keep you from making good choices, taking opportunities, or reaching your potential. Ultimately, limiting beliefs can keep you stuck in a negative mind frame  and stop you living a full life.

The great thing about limiting beliefs is that you can choose to change them whenever you want!  We are not saying it's easy but if you develop the self awareness of what they are and commit to overcoming them then it clears the path for creating the life that you want.

We must challenge those beliefs and think of everything as a skill you can learn and get better at over time. Not good with names, then practice over and over and find a strategy that will help you.  Not good at public speaking, then start small and make a commitment to practice and push yourself and speak up in a meeting, then agree to a couple of presentations, the more you do, you'll be surprised how much easier it gets.

So the reason why it's important to recognise your limiting beliefs is that when you create a vision of what you want your life to look like you need to know what you are going to need to know and what roadblocks you have to clear.

So now go back to your vision. Ask yourself- “is the vision you have for yourself constrained by your limiting beliefs. So you may say I want to be a specialist surgeon but your limiting belief says “I’m not smart enough” See how that would hold you back?

Spend some time now looking at your vision and then writing down those thoughts that sneak into your head about why you couldn't achieve these things.

With work we can challenge and change these beliefs and reach our potential.
